You’ve booked your professional photographer (eeek, I can’t wait to work with you!), either I’ve scouted or you have found yourself a picturesque location, and we have set a date for your upcoming photo session. Now, one crucial question remains: What should you wear? Your choice of clothing can greatly influence the outcome of your photos, so I’ve put together a comprehensive what to wear to your photo session guide to help you look your best and make those memories last a lifetime.
The number 1 rule – Be Comfy!
Dressing yourself in the morning can be hard enough as it is when you don’t have to stand in front of the camera that day! Don’t stress yourself out about it, this guide will help you choose something for you and your whole family to wear. The number one thing for you to remember is to be comfy! If you want your photos to be authentic and true, show up as you! To capture this time in your life, you need to feel good and then you will look good, so it is best to go with something that resembles your personality the best.

Match your outfit to the location
You may feel pretty uncomfortable choosing to wear high heels at the beach, so plan your outfit around what you know about the location. I want to capture you as authentically as possible! You can bring a couple of different outfits to change into if you feel like it too. I like to tell people to incorporate textures and movement. Layer your outfit with scarves and jumpers, or choose flowy fabrics that will pick up in the wind. The choices are endless!

Colour Schemes
I normally tell clients to aim for neutrals, earthy tones or metallics if they completely unsure of what to wear. These colours compliment almost every environment and look absolutely timeless when printed and hanging on your walls, not to mention that colours will generally go with all home decor perfectly! I would avoid large over-bearing logos or lots of crazy patterns unless that is your vibe 100%.
Accessories and Props
Hats, sunnies, socks and jackets are great ways to jazz up your accessory game! I would avoid watches as they can be a bit distracting when people are holding each other’s faces ect.
Select the right shoes for the location! Leather is great for boots and sandals will win over flip-flops any day. If you wear heels like a pro, I am all for that but keep in mind I will probably be giving you energetic prompts to capture real emotions and genuine smiles. Go for subtle props to incorporate things that make you, you! I want to tell the story of you and your family, so skateboards, instruments, surfboards, beer/wine or an umbrella are all great options.
