Becoming a mother is a journey filled with wonder and anticipation. It’s a time of profound change and transformation, both physically and emotionally. One beautiful way to celebrate this unique chapter in your life is through maternity photography. Maternity photos capture the radiance, love, and excitement that come with expecting a child. To make the most of your maternity photo session, it’s important to prepare thoughtfully. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to ensure your maternity photoshoot is a memorable and joyful experience.
When to Schedule your photoshoot
The ideal time for a maternity photoshoot is typically between 28 to 34 weeks into your pregnancy. At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully prominent, and you’re likely still comfortable enough to move around easily.

Location and Time
Consider where you’d like your photoshoot to take place. Do you envision a natural outdoor setting, the cozy ambiance of an indoor studio, or the comfort of your own home? The location should reflect your personality and style. Additionally, think about the theme or mood you’d like to convey in your photos. Would you like to show off your growing body in full? Let’s go to a location that allows nudity. More of a bush fiend? Lets hit the bush! More of a flower lover? We will find a beautiful garden or wildflower field.
What to wear
Your choice of clothing can significantly impact the look and feel of your maternity photos. Select outfits that accentuate your baby bump while making you feel comfortable and confident. Flowy dresses, fitted gowns, or casual attire can all work beautifully, depending on your style and preferences. I do have a range of fabrics, gowns and kimonos to choose from as well. We can have a discussion and work out what would be best for your session together. For more of a guide on what to wear for the family, head to my ultimate what to wear guide!
Hair and Make-up
On the day of your photoshoot, I suggest pampering yourself with professional hair and makeup services. Feeling beautiful and radiant will shine through in your photos. If you prefer doing your own makeup, keep it natural and glowy to enhance your pregnancy glow.

Get your family involved
If you wish, involve your partner, children, or even pets in the photoshoot. Capturing special moments between family members can add depth and emotion to your maternity photos and make you feel that bit more confident and comfortable as well. They are your biggest fans!
A maternity photoshoot is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the beauty of pregnancy and the love you’re about to welcome into your life. By carefully preparing for your session, you’ll ensure that these precious moments are captured in a way that you’ll cherish forever. Embrace this special time and let the magic of maternity photography preserve your journey into motherhood.
